Recycled plastics in food contact materials (FCM) for the EU market
On 20 September 2022, the EC has published the latest version of Regulation EU No 2022/1616 on recycled plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with foods. As per this regulation, several requirements are to be met by the recyclers whose decontamination installations are located outside of the EU. These concrete mandatory regulatory requirements can be found in Articles 9, 10, 21, 25 and 26 of Regulation (EU) No 2022/1616.
In December 2023, the EC has provided on their website one document1 on the relevant "Contact points for the CA outside the EU", which includes the names and addresses of the national CA that should be contacted by the recyclers that have decontamination installations located in countries outside of the EU. These recyclers need to provide the relevant information as requested in the above-mentioned articles of Regulation (EU) No 2022/1616 to the CA. It is to be noted that the current document does not include the names and addresses for all CA located outside of the EU yet. This document intends to help the companies located outside of the EU to fully comply with the regulatory requirements from Regulation (EU) No 2022/1616, applicable to companies that produce recycled plastics, used thereafter in making FCM and food contact articles, intended to be brought onto the EU market.
