IUCLID - proof of concept project for biopesticide dossiers

Following the first successful phase of testing the suitability of IUCLID for the preparation of pesticide dossiers in IUCLID format for a chemical active substance, knoell was commissioned by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) again. This time to work on a dossier where a micro-organism is the active agent.

IUCLID (International Uniform ChemicaL Information Database) is a software application for the electronic submission (e-submission) of chemical data in Europe. With the most recent update of IUCLID (version 6.5, 28 October 2020), it was also introduced as new tool to handle pesticide dossiers and to fulfil the requirements of the Transparency Regulation coming into force in March 2021. The suitability of IUCLID software for pesticide dossiers was tested by knoell in a pilot project commissioned by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Also see our news of 28 August 2020.

The knoell team also successfully delivered the second part of the “IUCLID for pesticides” project, handling a biopesticide micro-organism dossier in IUCLID format: the entry of most of the active micro-organism related data into IUCLID did not cause any problems and was straightforward. The extensive amount of literature data citing information on the active micro-organism could easily be summarised within the IUCLID database thanks to its many fields and flexibility. However, for example the section for biological properties might be improved and knoell provided some suggestions how this could be done.

For biocides under BPR (Biocidal Products Regulation) IUCLID is already successfully used for microbial products. The already gained experience in the first phase of the IUCLID pilot, the extensive knowledge on the use of IUCLID for different regulatory programmes (REACH, CLH, BPR) as well the microbial expertise of the knoell experts helped to deliver this thorough test and evaluation on suitability of the software. All test details and conclusions are presented in the full report.
