ANSES list of priority substances for evaluation of ED properties

ANSES has prepared a list of priority substances for which ED properties should be investigated under the second national strategy (SNPE 2)

Launched in 2019, the Second National Endocrine Disruptor Strategy (SNPE 2), continues and expands efforts in France to reduce the exposure of the population and the environment to ED.

The Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Health commissioned ANSES to develop two methodological tools to focus efforts on priority substances and carry out a rigorous assessment of their properties as potential endocrine disruptors. These two tools are:

  • A list of the substances considered to be of interest owing to their potential endocrine action, associated with a prioritisation strategy;
  • An expert appraisal method to weigh the scientific evidence identifying a substance as an endocrine disruptor, in order to classify it as “known”, “presumed” or “suspected”.

This list of interest initially included 906 substances. These substances have multiple uses: some are used only in industrial processes, others are found in everyday consumer products, pesticides, biocides or medicines. This initial list is based on India's DEDuCT database, supplemented by co-formulants as well as active substances covered by the Plant Protection Products Regulation (PPPR) or the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR). Some of them are already being investigated for their endocrine disrupting properties under the European regulatory framework. Applying the expert appraisal method to the list of 906 substances in order to identify those substances that require prioritisation regarding the assessment of their ED properties ANSES was able to identify 16 priority substances.
