New regulatory requirements support the registration of biological crop protection in South Asia

Adapting to new challenges, agribusinesses are obligated to find new and more sustainable technologies. Striving to provide producers with sustainable crop protection, several countries in South Asia adjust regulatory requirements to better fulfill the demand for biological products. Our expert for business development in Asia and the Pacific area, Dr. Piyatida (Tung) Pukclai, has gathered all relevant information on the changes made in regulatory requirements.

To further advance the registration and use of biological products in the field of plant protection products, several South Asian countries have adapted their regulatory processes. With most legislators already having published clearer guidelines for the admission of bioproducts, Dr. Pukclai presents the most important changes and how they may affect the development of new products and the usage of existing crop protection agents in the future.

New procedures for the admission of biopesticides in Thailand find toxicological data no longer required, making the dossier evaluation process shorter than for conventional pesticides. In the effort of promoting clean and safe agricultural production, Vietnam is proposing to remove over 15 active ingredients from the list of pesticides permitted to use by 2023. The number of biopesticides applied to the fields is expected to grow to 20% by 2025.

Although the implication of new guidelines proves to be difficult, the Southeast Asian market for biological products is projected to continue to grow, their strategy set on reducing the use of chemical agents.
