A new OECD guideline allows in vitro and QSAR skin sensitisation potency subcategorisation

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) prepared a new draft Guideline for Defined Approaches for Skin Sensitisation. This draft guidance shows an interesting development of the evaluation of skin sensitising potential of substances without using animals.

So far, a decision on potency subcategorisation according to UN GHS (subcategories 1A and 1B) solely based on in vitro studies was not possible. This draft guidance describes an approach combining in vitro testing and QSAR analysis in order to discriminate between skin sensitisers and non-sensitisers or potency subcategorisation.
