Possible CMR classification for Ethanol in EU

Possible CMR classification for ethanol in EU brings potential impact for hand disinfectants
By 31 December, Greece intends to submit a proposal for harmonised classification and labelling of ethanol classifying it as flammable liquid 2, eye irritation 2, reproductive toxicity 2 and STOT 2 and 3.

This potential classification will cause ethanol to be classed as CMR (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic or Reproductive toxicity) and threaten the ability for approval under the BPR. Although derogations are possible on the grounds of public health and a lack of suitable alternatives, the possible impact of this classification to the European hand sanitiser market could be devastating.
